Frequently Asked Questions (FAqs)
1. How would you explain "Deep Listening" briefly to someone unfamiliar with the concept?
Deep Listening is a form of listening that breaks habitual patterns of listening and nurtures new ways to listen through specific practices. Originally rooted in spiritual traditions like the Islamic Sufi tradition's "Sema" (spiritual audition) and Zen Buddhist practice emphasizing mindful, compassionate listening without judgment or reaction, it also made its way into 20th-century music composition with Pauline Oliveros and R. Murray Schaefer highlighting the importance of listening to the sounds of our environment.
2. What does it mean to take a systems approach in your work, particularly in this context?
In my work on burnout recovery, a systems approach means shifting focus from viewing poor work-life balance or toxic productivity as causes of burnout. Instead, it recognizes them as outcomes of systemic factors affecting individuals. Blaming individuals for these outcomes is counterproductive. My approach acknowledges systemic oppression's impact on work-life balance and feelings of inadequacy, aiming for systemic change that addresses these root causes.
3. What does R.E.S.U.R.G.E.N.C.E. stand for?
RESURGENCE is a program rooted in mindfulness, positive neuroplasticity, deep listening, intersectionality, and sustainable activism. It's an acronym for rest, Earth-connection, self-compassion, and more, encompassing compassionate practices to promote well-being and resilience.
4. What are your aspirations for your work?
I aspire to cultivate a community of advocates who support each other and resist oppressive forces that threaten creativity and well-being. In the face of shifts in funding away from creative industries and non-profits towards militarization, I aim to empower creatives and advocates to sustain themselves and keep shining their light amidst challenging circumstances.
